When finished, the final bill was $102 million, mostly paid by a State Lottery. Precisely 233 designs were submitted to the Opera House's international design competition in 1956. Denmark's Jørn Utzon received ₤5000 for his winning design. The construction took 14 years, ten years longer than expected!
