DISCOVERING AMERICA BY RIVER
Do you ever feel like you get so focused on those far away destinations you dream of visiting that in some ways you end up missing out on just how amazing our country is? I would bet that the vast majority of people have never been to all 50 states. How about you? Have you been to all 50 states? I know I haven’t.
Whether you have or you have not, the statement still stands true, America has some really incredible sights to see, things to do, and local people to meet. Rather than sending you off on an epic road trip where you’re going to get lost, run out of gas, and wind up broke down on the side of the road I’m instead going to tell you about a much better way, traveling by river.
When most think about river cruising they picture the iconic European river cruises that we see on TV with names like Viking and AmaWaterways. So, it may surprise you when I’m excited to tell you about river cruising in America. An American river cruise is the ideal way to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will be immersed into the richness of American history as you experience parts of our country in a way different than you have ever experienced before. It’s said that a river can change you in ways you never thought possible. And that’s exactly what you can expect when you step aboard the American Queen Steamboat Company.
Prepare to be transported back in time as you come aboard one of their luxurious steamboats. These are nothing like the much more well-known ocean-going cruise ships nor are they like the European river cruises either. Each of their ships are the perfect combination of classic style and design paired with modern conveniences and technology. Their iconic paddlewheel design commands the attention of everyone who sees one of these ships sailing past on the river.
Don’t let their classic design fool you into thinking these ships aren’t up to the standards you’ve come to expect either. Modern facilities such as a gym, a spa, café, entertainment venues and several different dining options will make your time aboard more than enjoyable. But as glamorous as your ship will be, I can bet that you’ll have a hard time focusing your attention away from the passing scenery as you float down the river.
History enthusiasts and nature lovers will be right at home as you discover the hidden treasures of America. The American Queen Steamboat Company offers incredible and in-depth itineraries on the Upper Mississippi River, the Lower Mississippi River, Ohio & Tennessee Rivers, and out West on the Columbia & Snake Rivers.
Your cruise fair includes a wide range of included shore excursions at each port of call, which if you’re used to ocean cruising is very different. Your typical ocean-going cruise has available shore excursions, but they come at an extra cost. On the American Queen, just like many other river cruise lines, the excursions are all built-in to the cost of the cruise.
You can visit the historic home of Ulysses S. Grant, take a tour of the National Eagle Center, or marvel at the beautiful crafts at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum.
You can experience the birthplace of blues and if you are a lover of architecture, the abode of Antebellum neoclassical architecture on one of the Lower Mississippi River Cruises. You can discover the rich history and diversity of the Southern Culture in the Mississippi Delta and the heart of New Orleans. There is also something exciting for lovers of nature’s raw beauty as there are centuries-old shaded oak trees, aboriginal wildlife, and huge plantations such as the Oak Alley and the Nottoway Plantation. For history lovers, you can visit historic sites such as the Vicksburg National Military Park and the Peabody Hotel of Memphis. You can visit Graceland, a must for any lover of Elvis. You can appreciate the sound of music with a visit to the Grammy Museum Mississippi, the B.B. King Museum, and Delta Interpretive Center.
Maybe it’s my inner old man coming through, but honestly the activity that sounds the most intriguing to me is sitting on the deck in a wooden rocking chair, just enjoying the natural grandeur of the river. Just picture a crystal-clear blue sky, a cool breeze blowing in from the north, and catching sight of a bald eagle swooping down to catch its prey out of the river – that’s the kind of moments that happen on an American river cruise.
And I’ve only begun to touch on what all is possible aboard a cruise with the American Queen Steamboat Company. You get to experience luxury, nature, and adventure all wrapped up in a single trip… And it’s all right here in America. As you take one of these river cruises and relive the amazing experiences of Mark Twain on the Mississippi, you can be rest assured the adventurer in you will be cultivated!
If any part of you feels like you would like to experience this for yourself, I encourage you to set up a time for us to talk. I understand traveling right now isn’t possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning for the future.
